A Successful Composer

After being praised by other composers of the time (such as Joseph Haydn) Mozart firmly established himself as a popular success.

In a reflection of some indie bands today, Mozart booked unusual (and often intimate) venues and premiered his latest works there to enraptured audiences.

For three years (between 1782 and 1785) Mozart was the hottest property in Vienna, with his piano concertos proving highly successful.

Money started flowing in, and Wolfgang began to live a life of comparative luxury.

He even rented an apartment that cost 460 florins a year - that’s more than his previous job had paid!

He and his wife sent their son to a pricey boarding school, bought a top-of-the-range piano and installed a billiard table in their house.

They also employed a number of servants to do their bidding.

Unfortunately, Mozart wasn’t thinking of the future - he was spending every penny he earned on this life of luxury.

His next accomplishment was to produce two amazing operas - The Marriage of Figaro and Don Giovanni - both of which were incredibly successful. Mozart’s father sadly did not get to witness this success however, as he died in May 1787.

Finally, Mozart was offered a job for a true Royal - Emperor Joseph II, who had wanted to pay him the huge sum for the one-off concert a number of years before. It wasn’t a full-time job, but it did help to pay the bills.
